Je suis pour une ville compacte, c’est aussi une réflexion dans mon sujet de mémoire « coupure » car une ville diffuse crée des fragmentations. L’idée de repenser le périurbain et s’orienter vers une ville durable est très important.

You are right, the Viator hotel looks like that it had been built during the Hausmann period of Paris. It shows the typical architectural aspects. The previous building has probably been demolished for the construction of the Rue de Lyon and the Rue Parrot.

i understand chimneys must extend above adjacent roofs, but in many cases groups of Paris chimneys, forming planes, extend 2 or even three stories above adjacent roofs.

is this in anticipation of future stories?

Thank you for your interest.
As you said, chimneys must be above adjacent windows and roofs. If they extend higher, I do not think that it is in anticipation of futures stories, as it is not so expensive to extend them later, if necessary.
Maybe you can send me a picture of such an situation as you describe.

Mr. Horn I am so happy to have stumbled upon this article, and more importantly, you! I have been trying to obtain a typical “section” of a Haussmann building. I am looking into the possibility of purchasing an apartment in Paris, within a Haussmann or “Haussmannian” building. However, the floor plans are certainly not like American apartments in that the kitchen is far from the living/dining rooms. I’m trying to determine the feasibility of moving the kitchen into the salon/dining space (or right nearby, and opening a wall). Also, the idea of one “water closet” and multiple “shower rooms” is something I’d like to change. Anyway, can I communicate with you via a work email or such?

I generally try to use my own images, to find images labelled Creative Commons, or those in the public domain.
Concerning the image of the shanty towns of Nanterre, I could not find out who was the author. So I can not help you further on this point.
